From CO₂ to ski wax boxes: NG Nordic and SWIX partner to turn captured carbon into new sports innovation
NG Nordic and SWIX have joined forces to develop high-performance winter sports equipment using the world’s first plastic made from CO₂ captured from waste incineration. The development collaboration will start by transforming captured carbon dioxide emissions into ski wax boxes.
The partnership brings together NG Nordic’s pioneering Carbon2x technology, which converts captured CO₂ into sustainable raw materials, and SWIX’s innovation leadership in high-performance, PFAS-free ski products. Together, the companies aim to redefine how materials are sourced and used in the outdoor sports industry – proving that climate-positive innovation can go hand in hand with durability, functionality, and world-class performance.
Carbon dioxide turned into a new kind of material
The new INGA CO₂-based plastic, developed under NG Nordic’s Carbon2x program, is a groundbreaking alternative to fossil-based plastics. The INGA plastic is made using carbon dioxide that has been captured from waste incineration – transforming what would be emissions into valuable raw material. It is high-quality, versatile, and suitable for a wide range of consumer products.
By using INGA plastic, the collaboration will make it possible to produce ski wax boxes that are not only durable and practical but also contribute to climate action – effectively storing captured CO₂ in a circular product.
“This is a milestone for sustainable material innovation,” says Tony Rehn, Director, CCUS & Decarbonization, NG Nordic. “Turning CO₂ emissions into new materials allows us to replace fossil raw materials and support a truly circular economy. Partnering with SWIX – an innovation leader in the ski industry – shows how climate technology can create real products that people use every day.”
SWIX: innovation and performance without compromise
SWIX has been a benchmark for ski wax innovation since 1946 and continues to lead the industry in developing fluoro-free, environmentally responsible performance products. In 2022, SWIX became the first major ski wax brand to completely phase out fluorinated compounds.
“Innovation is part of SWIX’s DNA,” says Aki Tuovinen, Head of Product Development, SWIX. “We are proud to pioneer solutions that combine performance and environmental responsibility. Partnering with NG Nordic allows us to take that vision beyond waxes – turning carbon emissions into a material that protects and performs on the tracks and slopes.”
A collaboration built on Nordic innovation
Both companies share a commitment to science-based innovation and climate action. For NG Nordic, this project expands the use of INGA plastics into new applications. For SWIX, it’s a natural continuation of its leadership in responsible product development and its heritage of helping athletes perform in harmony with nature.
Through this collaboration, NG Nordic and SWIX aim to combat climate change and contribute to securing winters for future generations of athletes – ensuring that the joy of snow, sport, and outdoor life can continue for decades to come. The aim of the joint development is to unveil new CO2-based products in the coming years, with full commercial rollout before the end of the decade.
