Solving Global Challenges Together: 500 tonnes of PFAS Foam to Safe Treatment in Finland
An important international hazardous waste cooperation is now underway, enabling the safe treatment and disposal of approximately 500 tonnes of PFAS-containing firefighting foam from New Zealand.
PFAS, often known as "forever chemicals," are a growing global environmental concern because they remain in the environment for long periods and can pose risks to human health. Their treatment requires specialist facilities and strict regulatory controls.
When it comes to PFAS, disposal is not simply a question of geography. It is a question of expertise, technology, and the ability to manage these complex substances safely. Very few facilities worldwide can offer the complete solution required, which is why international cooperation is essential.
Working together with a specialist consultancy focused on hazardous waste solutions in New Zealand, NG Nordic has established a compliant and environmentally responsible solution for managing this complex waste stream for which treatment options remain limited globally. The first shipment has now arrived safely in Finland, with additional shipments planned throughout the year.
The project shows the value of international cooperation in solving complex environmental challenges. By combining expertise in hazardous waste management, logistics, compliance, and proven treatment capabilities, NG Nordic has created a sustainable solution for this difficult waste stream following the highest safety standards.
"This is an important step in reducing the environmental legacy of PFAS-containing firefighting foams and supporting responsible hazardous waste management," says Lisa Moen CCO, International Sales, NG Nordic.
